drama, music, tourism and
cultural understanding

Dear participant
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to our unique summer camp, which takes place between 27 July and 5 August 2008 with the theme of:

drama, music, tourism
and cultural understanding

The camp is open to anyone between the ages of 16 and 18. One boy or girl from each country within EEMA can participate and must have a reasonable command of the English language. The camp is designed for outgoing young people interested in other cultures.

The purpose of the camp and its itinerary is for its participants from a wide range of countries and cultures to get to know each other through drama, music and other activities, to sample the culture of their hosts and make friends for life. Therefore you will generally be one big group, unless split into smaller groups for special activities.

Randers and its surrounding area have lots to offer to really get the most out of our chosen theme with their traditions and excellent existing facilities within drama and music. Our partner from Randers’ theatre life – Randers EgnsTeater – is internationally renowned for its innovative approach and has toured in Canada and the UK. Randers is also noted for its choirs, and the leading choirs in the town have joined forces under an umbrella organisation called ‘Korby Randers’ (choir town) to promote and launch major concerts and events.

The cultural activities you will take part in here will be unlike those of the second part of the camp, on the Faroe Islands. Although part of the Kingdom of Denmark, the contrast here in terms of scenery, climate, culture and even language will be major! Traditions are enthusiastically upheld on these remote islands, and you will be given a unique chance to sample the song and dance of the islands.

Religion also plays a major role, probably because of the remoteness of the islands and their traditional and harsh main industry – fishing. Although the Faroe Islands have adapted well to modern life, tradition has not been forsaken, and continues to be strongly represented in Faroese fashion and design for example.

You are invited by the Rotary clubs of Tórshavn and Randers Vestre, boths clubs og Rotary District 1440, to take part in this short term summer camp. In 2006 we held for the first time ever in this Rotary district a similar camp which was also split between the mainland of Denmark and the Faroe Islands. The camp was a huge success and we expect to repeat this success and look forward to welcoming around 25 highly motivated young participants all headed by experienced Rotarian camp leaders.
